Irresistible Lightness of Sustainability
Sustainability is an inevitable benefit derived from duly applying the 4 principles of corporate governance for all corporations. As being a former Chief Legal Officer and one of the management team members of one of the biggest conglomerate of Turkey, I have had an observation that the notion of sustainability has become more and more fashionable for the last five years amongst the major corporate firms and holding companies in Turkey.

As far as I am concerned, the existing global economic system and its reflected competitive corporate life have consumed this notion vastly as a product so as to increase revenues, gain financial growth and set up credibility in terms of obtaining and utilizing financial facilities from its providers without giving proper attention to the needs and the values of employees, whom are the major facilitator and one of the core element of sustainability. This is one of the substantial dilemma to be focused on that I call it “corporate paradox”, which I believe, eventually shall lead us to consider about necessity of having a paradigm shift.

Without understanding the needs and the rationale behind of sustainability as a notion, I do not consider that such notion could have its impact over corporate life as it would have been.

For that purpose, I deliberately prefer to divide this fashionable word “sustainability” into two words, which are sustain and ability. The first word contains the intention of the management as well as the aim of maintenance and relevant adjustments to any business segment where ever is required and applicable; whereas the second word emphasizes the capability of setting up business principles for corporate transformation and even further pursuing to achieve such principles by fulfilling the needs and values of relevant corporate governance principles. In that sense, the word abilityhas its own manifestation, which explicitly requires mind-set changes of principal decision makers so that this not only enables and triggers the paradigm shift for the upper management but also resonates for all corporate level as a domino effect.
